I have looked into many topics for my final project but many of them I felt did not provide enough information for me to base a whole project off of. I have found Chinese art and sculpture to be very interesting, and specifically the use of jade in sculptures. Jade as a material is beautiful and there is a variety of jade available, the highly intricate sculptures produced by artists is unlike anything I have seen before. The rich history of jade carving is something I would like to cover, seeing how jade was used for items that could be described as “primitive” to then being used for jewelry and sculpture. One of the sources I found outlined the years and what jade was primarily used for during that time, which could be useful in picking a timeline I would want to dive into deeper. How has the present history and impact of jade altered the history of jade carving? Who owned the more intricate jade carvings and for what reasons? I think that covering the functionality of the jade carvings could be interesting because for as intricate and fragile the appear jade is a tough material. I think my next step would be to decide is I wanted to cover jade jewelry or sculptures depending on what resources I am able to find.
